James Flynn commenced his career in the Irish film industry with John Boorman’s Merlin Films International as Head of Development having previously worked for the Investment Bank of Ireland. From 1993 to 1997, James worked as Business Manager of the Irish Film Board. His responsibilities involved the analysis of feature films and television drama projects for development and production finance loans.
In July 1997, Flynn established Metropolitan Film Productions Limited. Flynn went on to establish Octagon Films in 2002 to develop and produce films for the international market. Octagon developed and produced Inside I’m Dancing in conjunction with Working Title/Universal. His subsequent credits as producer include P.S. I Love You and Neil Jordan's Ondine. He also served as producer or executive producer on television drama such as The Tudors, Raw and The Bougias.
Flynn produced multiple IFTA winning TV series such as Love/Hate, Penny Dreadful, Vikings and Kin. Flynn also produced 2017 IFTA nominated film Tomato Red: Blood Money.
James Flynn passed away in February 2023 and is fondly remembered by his many colleagues in the Irish film industry. The Best Drama award for Kin was accepted by his daughter Anna in his memory at the 2024 IFTA Awards.
