Julie Anne Robinson - IFTA Masterclass

IFTA is delighted to present a Masterclass in Directing for TV Drama with Julie Anne Robinson, Emmy, BAFTA and Golden Globe-nominated director and producer. Julie Anne was Emmy-nominated as Director of the first episode of Netflix’s global hit Bridgerton, and has directed episodes of numerous major series including Doctor Who, Grey’s Anatomy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Orange is the New Black, Grace and Frankie (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin) and Scandal (Kerry Washington). 

 

This masterclass is supported by Screen Ireland, and will be moderated by IFTA-winning director Hannah Quinn, director of Vikings Valhalla and The Boy That Never Was. This masterclass takes place on Thursday 7th November 2024, 3pm at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, Ship Street Great.

 

Julie Anne was integral to the launch of Bridgerton, directing its pilot episode, for which she received a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. The first season received a record-breaking 113 million views on Netflix. This year, she directed and executive produced two major episodes of BBC’s blockbuster sci-fi series Doctor Who. With Shonda Rhimes, she developed and executive produced The Catch (Mireille Enos, Peter Krause) for ABC.

 

She was BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated for BBC series Blackpool (David Morrissey, David Tennant) and received a further BAFTA nomination for Coming Down the Mountain (Nicholas Hoult).

 

Her TV credits also include The Good Place (Ted Danson, Kristen Bell), Parks & RecreationThe Middle, Masters of Sex (Michael Sheen), Nurse Jackie (Edie Falco), Roadies (Luke Wilson), On Becoming a God in Central Florida (Kirsten Dunst), The Last Tycoon (Kelsey Grammer, Lily Collins), Suburgatory, Weeds (Mary Louise Parker), 2 Broke Girls, Pan Am (Christina Ricci), Pushing Daisies (Anna Friel, Kristen Chenoweth) and Big Love (Bill Paxton)

 

In addition to her TV work, Julie Anne has directed the feature films The Last Song (Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth) and One for the Money (Katherine Heigl).

 

At this special Academy Masterclass, Julie Anne will discuss the unique directorial process on continuing TV drama series in both the US and the UK, including working with showrunners and writers and delivering a unique vision, while maintaining the aesthetic of a series; the exciting challenge of launching Bridgerton on Netflix and watching its success explodethe process of adapting literary work for screen; her career working as both director and executive producer, and much more.
