The Irish Film & Television Academy, in association with Screen Skills Ireland, present a special Masterclass with celebrated Production Designer Peter Francis.

Peter Francis’ work is the subject of this IFTA Skills in Focus Masterclass, where participants will hear first-hand from this Oscar-nominated Production Designer about his recent insights on designing ‘The Father’ and experiences, skills and technique over his 30 year career as a production & set designer.

With over 20 years in the industry, 2021 Oscar nominee, Peter Francis (The Father) is a production and set designer with credit’s on some of Hollywood’s biggest films. Working in the art department of major blockbusters such as David Fincher’s Alien 3 and Ridley Scott’s 1492: Conquest of Paradise  since the early 90s, Francis cultivated early set design credits on Mary Shelley’s FrankenteinGoldenEye, and Titanic. Francis went on to be the Art director of Enemy at the Gates starring Jude Law, the first two films in the Harry Potter franchise, (The Philosopher’s StoneThe Chamber of SecretsHellboy, Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and Casino Royale
 
As a production designer, Francis began on short films before working on features Mindhorn and The Pass in 2016. In 2017, he worked on The Mercy from director James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, and The Children Act starring Emma Thompson.

Francis was nominated at the recent 93rd Academy Awards for his production design on The Father, a film starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman that deals with Dementia. His production design on the film was widely acclaimed for deliberately disorientating the audience to capture the perspective of Hopkins’ character: “We wanted the set to add to his confusion so that you’re never quite sure where you are.”

The event is moderated by award-winning, Irish production designer, Tom Conroy. Tom studied Fine Art (Sculpture) at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and Film Design at the National Film and Television School, Beaconsfield, UK.  He has designed many productions including television series The Vikings and Camelot; feature films Legend, Breakfast On Pluto, Inside I’m Dancing and East Is East. Tom has been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, winning in 2010 for The Tudors. He won the IFTA Award in 2015 for his work on Legend, starring Tom Hardy.
