NUALA MOISELLE

Nuala Moiselle (1928–2018) was a key figure within Irish film and television, Nuala Moiselle was a legendary Casting Director, who remained at the forefront of the screen industries for over thirty years. Her deep industry knowledge shaped the careers of many celebrated actors and contributed significantly to the success of numerous films and television series.

In 2007, Moiselle received the IFTA Industry Contribution Award, presented to her by Irish director and long time collaborator Jim Sheridan. She was also honored with the Angela Award for Lifetime Achievement in Casting at the Subtitle European Film Festival. Nuala sadly passed away on 5th November 2018 in Dublin at the remarkable age of 90.

Born on May 4, 1928, in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, Nuala Moiselle developed a passion for the performing arts at a young age. In the 1960s and '70s, she also acted in Christmas pantomimes at the Gas Company Theatre and ran her own theatre school, the Nuala Moiselle Academy of Dance and Drama. Moiselle later transitioned into casting during the 1980s, quickly establishing herself as a key figure in Irish film and television. She served as casting director on major Irish films such as My Left Foot, The Field, and Veronica Guerin, alongside world-renowned TV series including Vikings, Penny Dreadful, and The Tudors. Her work on The Tudors earned her three Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Casting in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

 

Moiselle's casting decisions were instrumental in the success of several productions. She cast Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot, a decision that garnered him the first of his three Best Actor Oscars. She also worked with Day-Lewis on In the Name of the Father (1993) and The Boxer (1997), both directed by Jim Sheridan. Other notable actors she cast include Pauline McLynn in Ballykissangel, Cate Blanchett in Veronica Guerin, and Jeremy Irons in The Borgias.
