FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
9th ANNUAL IRISH FILM & TELEVISION AWARDS
ABOUT THE FILM
A ruling class sociopath kills a working class girl in a hit-and-run and uses a deck of playing cards to determine his fate.
Erudite, harmless, fast-talking egotist, Charlie Barnum's (Emmet Scanlan) smoke and mirror articulations conceal a prejudiced, over-educated sociopath who refuses to be bound by the restrictions of morality, law or even reality. Dangerously subversive, provocatively dark, and satirically disturbing, you've already met Walter Mitty and Billy Liar, now it's time for you to meet the darkest member of that twisted trio; the man of our times, Charlie Casanova.
REVIEWS FOR THE FILM
Charlie Casanova has wildly divided critics and audiences at home and abroad. The film had its world premiere at SXSW Film Festival in Austin Texas and was the first Irish film ever selected for the Narrative Feature Competition at this festival. Janet Pierson, head of SXSW Film Festival said the film was "one of the strongest directorial debuts we've ever seen."
However Variety critic, Andrew Barker describes it as, "a punishing experience…bordering on audience abuse." Charlie Casanova went on to win awards in Paris and America, was selected for The Edinburgh Film Festival, then returned to make its Irish debut at this year's Galway Film Fleadh where it was awarded 'Best First Feature'. The film has just been acquired for an Irish and UK cinematic release by Optimum Releasing/Studio Canal.
